Recruitment and Safer Working Practice
We are committed to safer recruitment practices, including:
- Enhanced DBS checks for relevant staff
- Reference checks
- Verification of qualifications
- Safeguarding training
- Clear code of conduct expectations
Staff Responsibilities
All staff must:
- Prioritise children’s welfare
- Maintain professional boundaries
- Report concerns immediately
- Complete safeguarding training
- Follow reporting procedures
- Never ignore signs of abuse or neglect
Recognising Abuse
Staff should be aware of signs of:
- Physical abuse
- Emotional abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Neglect
- Bullying
- Online abuse
- Exploitation
Concerns must always be taken seriously.
Reporting Concerns
If a concern arises: 1. Record the concern factually and accurately. 2. Report immediately to the DSL. 3. Do not promise confidentiality to a child. 4. In emergencies, contact police or children’s social care.
All concerns will be documented securely.
Responding to a Disclosure
If a child discloses information:
- Stay calm
- Listen carefully
- Reassure the child
- Do not ask leading questions
- Explain you may need to share the information
- Record what was said accurately
- Inform the DSL immediately
Online Safety
Where technology or social media is used:
- Staff must use professional communication methods only
- Personal messaging with children is prohibited
- Inappropriate online behaviour will be addressed immediately
Physical Contact
Appropriate physical contact may occasionally be necessary in sports coaching for:
- Safety
- Demonstration
- First aid
Any contact must:
- Be appropriate
- Be explained where possible
- Respect the child’s comfort and dignity
Allegations Against Staff
Any allegation involving a member of staff or volunteer will be:
- Taken seriously
- Reported to the appropriate authorities where required
- Managed confidentially
- Investigated according to safeguarding procedures
Whistleblowing
Staff are encouraged to report unsafe or inappropriate behaviour without fear of retaliation.
Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if legislation or guidance changes.
